Lower East Side Preservation Coalition -- Declaration of Preservation Principles
The Lower East Side Preservation Coalition (LESPC) was formed to explore options and pursue strategies for neighborhood stabilization and preservation. An integral part of the Coalition's work is to maintain dialogue with other organizations involved in establishing an historic district. These include city agencies, property owners and civic groups.

The Coalition includes Angel Orensanz Foundation, City Lore, East Village Community Coalition, The Eldridge Street project, Hester Street Collaborative, Kehila Kedosha Janina Synagogue and Museum, Lower East Side People's Mutual Housing Association, the Lower East Side Tenement Museum.

LESPC seeks to
  • Unite diverse stakeholders behind common community stabilization and development goals
  • Stimulate the development of a comprehensive neighborhood-stabilization plan
  • Preserve the physical character of the neighborhood as an historic immigrant and working-class neighborhood
  • Preserve affordable housing long-term and on a local level
  • Support efforts to keep long-term residents in the neighborhood and prevent the displacement of residents
  • Identify community facility space for non-profit use
  • Support the preservation of affordable commercial space for small entrepreneurs in the neighborhood
  • Support Community Board 3's contextual zoning initiative
  • Support efforts to assist property owners through initiatives such as low-interest loans for historic preservation and the maintenance and/or rehabilitation of existing affordable housing units
  • Support New York City landmark designation to preserve the historic fabric and commemorate the story of America's urban working class and poor immigrants/migrants on the Lower East Side
